The Real Reason You Haven't Started (It's Not What You Think)

By Art Harrison • July 20, 2025

You have the idea and the ambition, but you're still on the sidelines. The real barrier isn't your plan or resources—it's the fantasy of success.

I learned a long time ago that many people have big dreams and talk a good game, but they don't do anything with it.

When I was 16, a friend was going on a trip with his marching band. The rest of us made a grand plan to pool our money, drive down, and surprise him. I genuinely thought this was the plan. I packed a bag, took out the little money I had, and stood on my front steps the next morning, waiting.

Nobody showed up. Not a single person even called.

It was in that moment I realized the problem most people have: they are completely consumed with the fantasy of what their life could be, but they never take action to make it real.

This isn't just about road trips. It's about starting businesses, changing careers, and leading projects. People get so nourished by just fantasizing about the outcome that they never take the first step. This fantasy addiction is a sophisticated form of procrastination and a key pattern for those struggling with analysis paralysis.

The Action Divide That Determines Everything

The real reason you haven't started your business or gone for that promotion isn't because you lack:

  • The perfect idea
  • Enough money
  • The right connections
  • More knowledge

The real reason is that you haven't taken one, small, real-world action. Every single person who has ever succeeded, at some point, took a first step. Everyone who never took an action is still on the sidelines.

Starting Is Smaller Than You Think

Most people don't understand that "starting" doesn't have to be a huge, terrifying leap. Nobody starts with a perfect idea or all the skills they need. They just do one small thing to make it real.

  • They tell one person about their idea.
  • They post on LinkedIn, "I'm thinking of working on this."
  • They write one blog post about their expertise.
  • They have one conversation with a potential stakeholder.

These small acts break the spell of the fantasy. They make the idea real, create momentum, and generate the feedback you need to move forward. They are the foundation for Building Confidence to Act Despite Uncertainty.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Here's my honest advice: stop consuming and start producing. Stop watching videos, reading articles, and listening to podcasts about what you want to do. Turn this off and go do one small thing. Take one tiny step toward your goal.

Then tomorrow, do a little bit more. The content will always be there when you need specific inspiration, but at some point, you have to cross the line from thinking to doing.

Today is the day. Take one small action. Declare what you want to do and see what happens. See if you are the type of person who can actually begin to achieve your dreams.

You know, I learned a long time ago that so many people have big dreams and they talk a good game that they don't do anything with it. When I was 16, I had a bunch of friends over to my parents' house. One of the group was heading away with a local margin band in Myrtle Beach. The rest of us said, you know what? This could be amazing. Why don't we all just go? We and crash in his hotel room. If we pool our money together, we should be able to pay for gas and have enough to eat And when everybody left, I genuinely thought that this was the plan, that the next day we were going to go. So I ran to the bank, took out the little bit of money I had. I even packed a bag. And I stood on the front steps of my house the next morning, just waiting for someone to come and nobody showed up. Even worse than that, even more frustratingrating, was that not a single person even called to say, you know what? Something came up. I just can't make it. It was in that moment that I realized that's the problem that most people have. They just are totally consumed with the idea, the fantasy of what their life could be, of the adventures they're going to go on, of the freedom they're going to have. And it's not just about trips. It's about starting businesses, changing the career getting a promotion, whatever it is, people get so consumed with the idea. They are so fueled, they're nourished by just fantasizing about things, and I am not like that. I want to actually get out there. I want to actually experience it. And I'm okay with the idea that not everything is going to work out the way that I thought If you really want to make a change, if you want to start a business or do anything, the only thing you really need to do is take a first step. Every single person that's ever succeeded at some point in their life doesn't matter where they came from, what privilege they have. At some point, they did something. They took an action Everyone that never took an action, there is zero of them that live on that side of success. They're all somewhere mediocrity. They might be happy. They might be living at content life, but they never went after that dream, so they never achieved it. If you treat your life, if you treat the ideas, that dreams you have, like they're the lottery, like somebody's going to call your number or knock in your door with a novelty check, it's just not going to happen. That's just how it works What most people don't understand, what I really want to make sure you get out of this video is that starting doesn't have to be as big or as scary as you might think it is. Somebody starts with a perfect idea. Nobody starts with all of the knowledge, all of the perfect skills. All that they do is they take some action, some little action to make it real Sometimes it's as simple as just telling somebody. posting it on LinkedIn or anywhere else and just saying, you know what, I'm thinking of doing this. I've known people that started their business by just going out and printing a single t-shirt with the logo that they had been noodling with. Just having that t-shirt put it at it on every night or every morning when they were working on their idea made it feel real There's so many little things you could do to take the ideas and dreams you have right now and to start making your way towards them. It's not always going to work out. You're going to have setbacks. You might have to pivot, but you got to do something. know, for me, I got to stake the next five, ten years of my life on this exact premise, because I'm just frustrated of watching people that are so capable and deserving to absolutely nothing with it. My version of saying it publicly is this right now. I just started a brand new business call for a Step Entrepreneur. I believe that people don't need business coaching or consulting. You don't need a business plan. You don't need fundraising advice. What you really need is the confidence to take the ideas you have and to start talking about them, sharing them, asking people for their support. And that's what for step entreneur is all about. It's a cohort where people that are like-minded can come together, start building things together, and build a muscle memory and the proof that there's somebody who can take action. Once you have that, you can apply it to anything. It doesn't matter if you don't have an idea right now. One day you will, and you'll know what to do with it. One day you'll want a promotion that you'll know that the best way to get it is to do something. You can watch all the videos I have. I'll put a link up like I always do at the end of this video, but if you really want to know my honest advice, it's a terrible advice for somebody who needs their channel to bro, my honest advice is that you stop watching videos, at least today. Go do something. Turn it off. Take a first little step that you can take towards starting your own business or achieving your dream and then tomorrow do a little bit more as well. You know, the videos will always be there. There's always a time where you're going to need some more information or inspiration, but at some point, you got to stop and you got to just do it for yourself. You know what I know it may hurt my channel if you don't watch any more of my videos, but I also know that you'll tell somebody that I helped you out. They'll come to me. They'll join my program, and it'll work out in the wash So just go do it. Today's the day. What else are you waiting for? I'm telling you, go take Eddie small step, make a small action, declare what you want to do, and see what happens. See if you are the type of person who can actually begin a cheat in your dreams.
